Read, Write, Grow!™ is a comprehensive electronic literacy and assessment software program for students with disabilities. But it is more than simply an "e-book reader". Read, Write, Grow!™ was developed in a partnership between AbleNet Inc. and SoftTouch specifically designed for the needs of special education students. In addition to level-appropriate content, Read, Write, Grow!™ allows students to read and write using non-traditional methods including switches, picture-symbols, speech generating devices like BIGmack, Step-by-Step, Supertalker and a variety of software access options.

The Read, Write, Grow!™ user interface has been developed to get students interacting with the application—and reading—as quickly as possible. Pre-populated with level-specific curriculum books, the student selects a book in one click to begin reading immediately. The easy-to-use "Reading" interface allows the student to have maximum visible area for the "book" content while at the same time providing essential page navigation functions at the bottom of the screen.

Several writing options are available to students: words/phrases, pictures, letter groups, or keyboard. Once an option is selected, the student "writes" on each page using the option most appropriate to their writing ability. Words, images, or letters may be placed on the page through scan & select, click or drag & drop using a variety of access technologies.

Electronic assessment is a key feature of Read, Write, Grow!™ uncommon in similar "read-only" applications. Functioning in a similar way to both the "read" and "write" sections, the test interface presents the student with familiar interaction methodology and options. Answer options are displayed in alternate assessment format with standard answer & navigational options available. The software provides immediate feedback, allowing the student or teacher to print the results for progress reporting, sharing with parents or on-going record keeping.

While Read, Write, Grow!™ can be used “out of the box”, teachers can take advantage of several customizable options to tailor the software precisely to the needs of an individual student. Specifically – what books that student should read, which writing assignments are most appropriate, and which tests the student should be assigned. Appropriate computer access options are provided through a variety of assistive technology alternatives available in each section.
