About Hook+
Hook+ is an Apple MFi approved switch interface that provides a reliable wired connection to the iPad and iPhone via the Lightning connector. To get started, simply connect one to four switches to Hook+, turn Switch Control on, and connect Hook+ to your iPad or iPhone.

Hook+ utilizes the Apple auto switch configurator and the first time Hook+ is used with an iPad or iPhone it will automatically configure the iPad or iPhone to use single switch auto scanning or dual switch step scanning based on how many switches are connected to Hook+. Once initially configured, switches can be manually re-configured to meet the needs of the user. The Apple auto switch configurator is only available on Apple MFi approved switch interfaces.

Once Hook+ is connected and Switch Control is configured, you can do almost anything on an iPad or iPhone with a switch. Read an eBook, write an email, browse the internet, play games, control your home, and much more!

  • Hook+ is not compatible with apps that use keystrokes for switch clicks. Hook+ uses Apple’s proprietary HID Assistive Switch Control protocol for switch clicks and is compatible with Switch Control found in iOS 8 or later. To access Switch Control, go to the Settings App > General > Accessibility > Switch Control.
  • Hook+ is not compatible with iOS devices that use USB C.

  • Lightning connector provides a reliable wired connection
  • Utilizes Apple auto switch configurator
  • Hook+ does not have an internal battery and can be used as long as the iPad or iPhone has a battery charge

What devices are compatible with the Hook+?
Hook+ is compatible with the following Apple devices running iOS7 or later:
  • iPads: 4th Gen, Air, Air 2, iPad Mini (Gen 1, 2, 3 & 4), iPad Pro (9.7”, 10.5” and 12.9”) & iPad (2017)
  • iPhones: 5, 5c, 5s, 6, 6+, 6s, 6s+, SE, 7 & 7+
  • iPods: Nano (7th Gen) & Touch (5th & 6th Gen)

Why is Hook+ only compatible with iOS 7 or newer?
Switch Control was introduced in iOS 7 and is required for Hook+ to function.

My Apple device has a 30-pin connector, will it work with Hook+?
Unfortunately not, Hook+ uses a Lightning port connection to work with an Apple Device.

Why is Hook+ Apple Accessibility API compliant and why does it matter?
Hook+ leverages Apple’s Accessibility API which assigns switch presses Assistive Switch Events to communicate when scanning. In order to use Hook+ it’s essential that you activate Switch Control. Assistive Switch Events can only occur when using a device with the Switch Control feature.

Being compatible with Apple’s Accessibility API offers several benefits for the Hook+, such as:
  • Automatic device configuration when connecting with Apple device using Switch Control
  • Consistency of switch access throughout any compatible apps
  • Framework maintained by Apple, which means more frequent updates to benefit end-users

Why would I want to use Switch Control instead of an app’s built-in switch scanning?
Switch Control gives the user the ability to control & navigate most areas & features of an Apple device, not just specific options within a app. This provides a user freedom to navigate all aspects of their device, rather than limiting them to one app.

How do I get Hook+ set up with my iPad or iPhone?
Click here to view the iOS Switch Control Auto Configuration video.

How is Hook+ different from Hook?
The Hook iPod Interface was designed specifically for controlling music on an iOS device when connected to its 30-pin connector. Hook+ is a switch interface that uses the Switch Control feature to allow a user to interact in most areas of an iOS device when connected via Lightning Port.

How do I make my app compatible with Hook+?
You will need to integrate Apple’s simple UI Accessibility framework into your app. This framework will make the elements of your app compatible with Switch Control as well as other iOS accessibility features. For more information on this please contact Apple at

Why can't use Hook+ to wake my iOS device after Auto-Lock puts my device to sleep?
If you have the Auto-Lock feature on or press the Power Button on your iOS device, the screen will turn off and the device goes into a sleep mode to conserve power. Unfortunately, while in this sleep mode, the iOS device shuts off power to the Lightning port and Hook+. To avoid this issue, we recommend that you avoid using the Auto-Lock feature or put your device into sleep mode while using Hook+. For individuals using Hook+ throughout the day, you can turn down screen brightness to help conserve battery life. You might want to consider connecting the Hook+ charger via micro USB cable and use it while continuously charging the battery.
To disable Auto-Lock feature:
  • Tap the "Settings" icon
  • Click “General”
  • Select “Auto-Lock”
  • Tap “Never” to prevent your iPad from automatically sleeping
