Discover essential skills for supervising speech-language pathology Clinical Fellows (CFs) and graduate students! This course covers setting clear expectations, fostering open communication, and delivering effective feedback to build a supportive and productive supervisory relationship.

Presenter Biography: Julie Barry is a pediatric speech-language pathologist with over 13 years of experience in diverse settings, including specialized and public schools, hospitals, and rehab facilities. Currently, she works part-time at a pediatric practice alongside physical and occupational therapists. In addition to her clinical role, Julie is an adjunct instructor for a graduate program and operates her LLC for private clients and speaking engagements. Julie is a play-based neurodiversity affirming therapist with a special interest in motor speech disorders.

- Introduction to Supervision of Clinical Fellows (5 minutes)
- Overview of the Clinical Fellowship process and its purpose.
- Role of the supervisor as a mentor and evaluator.
- Importance of building trust and fostering professional growth.
- Setting Expectations (10 minutes)
- Defining clear goals and responsibilities at the start of the CF experience.
- Tools for creating shared objectives (e.g., written agreements, regular progress reviews).
- Managing expectations for workload, independence, and feedback timelines.
- Encouraging Open Communication (10 minutes)
- Establishing a foundation for a collaborative supervisory relationship.
- Active listening techniques to foster mutual respect.
- Strategies for creating a safe space for questions and concerns.
- Giving Effective Feedback (15 minutes)
- Principles of constructive feedback:
- Being specific, timely, and focused on behavior rather than the person.
- Using the “Feedback Sandwich” approach (positive–constructive–positive).
- Encouraging self-assessment and problem-solving from the CF.
- Role-playing or case examples to practice feedback delivery.
- Supporting Professional Growth (15 minutes)
- Identifying the CF’s strengths and opportunities for improvement.
- Helping CFs build confidence in clinical decision-making.
